6 days and counting!
Well the packing has begun and we anxiously await the moment to embark on our trip to Japan. It has been 3 years in the making for this trip and are thankful that it has come together so nicely. As disappointed as we all were to not be able to go last year following the devastating tsunami that struck Northern Japan, I have come to realize it was a blessing. The kids are just that much older and I hope they will appreciate and retain even more. And we have been able to connect up with many old friends who we will see along the way.
For those interested, here is our itinerary:
- March 31 / April 1 - travel to Japan (we're hoping Paige sleeps most of the way! :-))
- April 2 - visit many of my favorite spots in Tokyo, accompanied by a former Rotary Exchange Student that lived with Dave and Linda.
- April 3 - an organized tour to Mt. Fuji. (One of the things to check off from Kristie's bucket list!)
- April 4 - we fly to Osaka
- April 5 - an organized tour of Kyoto and Nara. Here we will see the original imperial palace, the gold temple, the Nara deer park, and a couple other historical sites.
- April 6 - just a leisurely day around Osaka. We'll probably visit Osaka-jo (the former castle now museum)
- April 7 - a trip over to Kobe to see an old friend from college - Shin.
- April 8 - fly to Okinawa. Very much looking forward to this part of this trip as I haven't been back to where I lived since 1991. Extremely excited to see old friends.
- April 9 - along with an old friend, Nobu, we will visit our old highschool, do some walk-bys of former host family homes (Linda would like to see where her boy slept), and generally refamiliarize myself with Naha.
- April 10 - a trip up to Manza Beach where we will stay one night. We used to go up to this beach on the weekends to hang out with friends. Will be nice to actually stay in a hotel this time!!
- April 11 - head back to Naha in the afternoon to meet up with old friends for a night on the town.
- April 12 - our last day. Time to visit Kokusai-dori and Heiwa-dori to pick up those last minute souvenirs and snap some final photos.
- April 13 - we begin the journey home.
A busy couple of weeks planned, but hopefully enough time to relax and enjoy each other. I've always said that I have been truly blessed to have the parents I do. Parents who when questioned by others about letting their 15 year old go away to such a foreign place like Japan for an entire year, simply said in reply, "how can we not let him go?" I am honored to have them as my parents and so truly excited to be taking them along on this trip. May my children have their eyes opened to the beauty of another country and all that its' culture has to offer.
